Looking forward to a...

...new job! And yes, I know this blog is specifically not about work, but I nevertheless want to share the news that I have a new job starting on July 1st. This last year has been difficult on many levels. The accident shook our foundation in a major way (and kept me off the job market for more than four months). We have moved twice(!) in less than a year and the area is still new to us, although we've found quite a few favourite spots. Our oldest was attacked and hit at the beginning of March by two unknown boys at his own age, and five days ago we lost quite a bit of our belongings in a burglary.

In view of all this it feels great to be able to share the news that I have found a new(ish) workplace. It is actually the same place where I worked six years ago although my role has changed slightly since I have a PhD now. In the autumn I will be teaching a few distance courses and supervise essays, and I really look forward to working with that bunch of people at that particular university again. I can't wait to get going!

Thieves and beggars

Not sure if any of these epithets are nice per se, but I think I'd prefer beggars to thieves — especially in the view of recent experiences. Last monday there was a break-in in our home. We were away for only a couple of hours and when we came home the door was slightly open and I tentatively asked T. if he had left it like that by accident. He denied this and when we got closer we saw the mess inside and realised that there had been a burglary.

My computer and my back-up harddrive were both gone, and with them all the work I have done in the last fifteen years as well as most of my photos. Our oldest son's computer was gone as well, together with his new video camera and a bunch of games. What left me completely heart-broken was the loss of my grandmother's jewellery, which was all I had from her. It hurts. I realise the chances are extremely slim to get any of this back, and it makes me both angry and sad to think about the physical as well as emotional mess thieves leave behind.

Poul Henningsen

An exhibition of the work of Danish lamp designer Poul Henningsen can be found at the local castle, Koldinghus, in Kolding, Denmark, until the end of August 2012. Most people are familiar with his Artichoke, which he designed in 1958, but his production is infinitely larger, encompassing streetlights as well as pendulums hanging over the kitchen table in many, many homes around the world. A really interesting exhibition in a very wonderful place.

What really got me going was the opportunity to take photos of PH's work from every imaginable angle, which resulted in some really cool images.

Our bedroom window

We have now moved in to the new house and it does look pretty nice as we're slowly getting rid of all the boxes and transform it from a house to our home. The window in our bedroom has looked like this from the day we moved in, so I thought it was an appropriate image to start with. More images will no doubt follow, showing our home in different lights and from different angles.

Møns klint

The amazing cliffs at Møns klint were a wonderful sight, which we indeed had to work for. It took some time to get to the bottom, to the beach filled with fossils, but it was admittedly even worse to climb the approximately 500 step up again. But we did and, yes, it was well worth it. I wouldn't mind going back there at some point. The Danish island Møn is really cute, so it might be worth a visit all on its own.
